ALITHSA Volunteer Recognition Program

Coach Frank Anguilo - U6 and U8

ALITHSA would like to recognize U6 and U8 Coach Frank Anguilo for his "above and beyond" volunteer work.

One of the nominations Frank received said:

Frank spends well over 11 hours a week on the field coaching our children. He dedicates his time to not one, but two soccer teams as the head coach of both. This works out to at least 5 days a week just coaching on the field alone. This does not include the endless amount of time he puts into planning out what he will work on at each practice, and the one-on-one assistance that he gives to kids many times after practice.

Frank also has been a fabulous communicator with his team’s parents. We are always well informed ahead of time about when and where our practices and games are, who is the snack person, and if there are any changes in the regular schedule. What really impresses me about Frank and his communication in the field position rotation he develops for the players."

We took a few minutes of Frank's time to get to know him a lttle better.

ALITHSA:

Frank, how long have you been involved in soccer and in what forms?

Frank:

Growing up in the 70's, there was not much recreational soccer around so my first real opportunity to play was in high school. I played for the Maine North Norseman all 4 years. As far as coaching, I have coached six ALITHSA soccer teams over the last 3 years.

ALITHSA:

What are the three top things for you as a coach?

Frank:

1. Have fun - From the first day I meet the kids, I have preached that the most important part of soccer is to have fun. If the kids are not having fun, they won't be back next year.

2. Positive Encouragement - The kids need to get positive feedback to know when they are doing the right thing and playing their best. I treat them with respect and they reciprocate.

3. Communication - As a coach, it is important to have good communication with both the parents and their kids. Having a good "soccer mom" helps with the organization of the soccer forms, schedule, snacks, party, pictures, rainouts. I happen to have the best soccer mom! She so happens to also be my wife :)

ALITHSA:

Equal Time is important to you (and to ALITHSA): How can we learn from you how to apply it and how to deal with challenges?

Frank:

I create a "Who plays where" spreadsheet at the beginning of the season and give it to the parents. It consists of where each player will play every quarter for every game. I can therefore make sure ahead of time that each player gets a chance to play each position the same as any other player. During scrimmages, I let the kids play their favorite positions when possible. As far as being a challenge, so long as winning is not the most important thing to you, it really is not a challenge. Just stick to the spreadsheet and all is fair.

ALITHSA:

Tell us about your most special soccer memory or event?

Frank:

The proud look on my son's face when he finally got his first goal. Another moment was when I received this email from a parent whose girl I just finished coaching in U6 ...

Hi Frank,
I thought you might enjoy this. Last night when Miranda was going to bed she said "my eyes are all watery, I think its because I am sad that soccer is over" I said what are you going to miss most? She said, "Coach Frank". Then this morning when she woke up, she said she is still sad that soccer was over and I asked again what are you sad about and she said again I won't get to see coach Frank. I thought that was cute. Just thought you would like to know that you made a big impression on Miranda! Thanks again for a great season, we appreciate all you put into it!

How could I not love coaching??

Also, it's great to see kids I coached in the past who come up to me to say hello.

ALITHSA:

How in your mind can we make soccer in ALITHSA as creative and fun as possible?

Frank:

Maybe having an ALITHSA group-level inter-league tournament would be fun. Just a day of soccer and a cookout at Presidential. Also, our Parents vs. kids games have been really fun for us.

ALITHSA:

Anything special you would like to share with all of us in ALITHSA about being a volunteer?

Frank:

You gotta love doing the volunteer work. I love working with kids. My boys really enjoy having me coach. It is just a great way of staying involved in your kid's lives.

Its a great feeling to have all the kids still showing up for practices and games towards the end of a Fall secession when the weather is miserable. It could only mean that they still looking forward to playing (hopefully because they have been having fun) after 8 long weeks.

ALITHSA:

Thank you Frank!
